C diff Treatment
How does one carry out c diff treatment? Clostridium
Difficile infection can be very serious. It can lead to
diarrhoea containing puss and blood, fever, weight loss and
colitis. In a worst case scenario it may cause a perforated
intestine and death.
Before discussing c diff treatment it is important to
understand something about the condition. Clostridium Difficile
is a bacteria which lives in the intestinal tract of a small
minority of human beings. C diff ordinarily does no harm
because the other bacteria in the intestines help guard against
any harmful effects.
Ironically, it is modern medicine which enables c diff to
become a dangerous and contagious infection. Antibiotics and
some treatments for stomach ulcers can damage bacteria that
keeps the cdiff from harming the body. In such cases the c diff
develops toxins that can prove dangerous. And because spores
can then be formed outside the body, the infection is very
easily spread. People can be infected should they inhale the
spores through the mouth and swallow. Also contact with
Clostridium Difficile infected faeces can lead to the infection
spreading. All this leads to hospitals being very prone to c
diff infection.
So is there any c diff treatment? While antibiotics may have
led to the infection developing, they are also used to kill it.
Metronidazole and Vancomycin are typically used in treatment as
they halt the growth of the Clostridium Difficile. Probiotics
are also useful as they aid the restoration of a healthy
balance in the intestinal tract. When used in conduction with
the likes of Metronidazole and Vancomycin they can
prevent the infection recurring.
Colitis is very common for those suffering cdiff infection.
Though the above mentioned treatments may help, in very
extreme cases surgery may be required to remove diseased parts
of the colon.
While c diff treatment is being carried out, hygiene is
absolutely essential. Hands should be washed, especially if
someone comes into contact with the faeces of a sufferer.
Bedding should should be properly laundered and any surfaces
that have been exposed to faeces thoroughly disinfected.
